Currently (and naturaly not for the first time) many artists are positioning their work explicitly within the context of social and economic processes adopting and adapting tactics and strategies of political intervention in public urban space. How does this tendency change their artistic practice? How do they relate to the neoliberal market on one hand and to contemporary forms of activism and resistance on the other? How can curators and festival organizers support art’s social impact without instrumentalizing it?

Gegenwärtig positionieren viele Künstler ihre Arbeit (wieder) explizit im Kontext gesellschaftlicher und ökonomischer Entwicklungen, indem sie Taktiken und Strategien der politischen Intervention im urbanen öffentlichen Raum anwenden. Was bedeutet diese Tendenz für ihre künstlerische Praxis? Wie verhalten sie sich zum neoliberalen Markt einerseits, zu neuen Formen von Aktivismus und Widerstand andererseits? Wie können Kuratoren und Veranstalter die soziale Wirksamkeit von Kunst fördern ohne sie zu instrumentalisieren?

The artistic use of sound in urban interventions, creates imaginary spaces and conjures heterotopias. Sound has the potential to challenge our everyday perception and inspire new kinds of social choreographies. What is the political potential of sonic practices? How do they change our experience of the city? How can audio-tours facilitate different ways of relating to the urban space? Starting from these questions, current developments of sound art in urban contexts will be discussed.

Interventionen in der urbanen Öffentlichkeit erzeugen durch den künstlerischen Einsatz von Klängen und Geräuschen imaginäre Räume und Heterotopien. Sie können unsere alltägliche Wahrnehmung erweitern und zu neuen Formen sozialer Choreographien anregen. Worin liegt das politische Potential dieser Praxis? Wie verändern sie die Erfahrung der städtischen Umgebung? Wie können Audiotouren ermöglichen, den Stadtraum anders zu erleben? Ausgehend von diesen Fragen werden aktuelle Entwicklungen von sound art im urbanen Kontext diskutiert.

Over the past two decades the popularity of site-specific artistic projects and urban festivals has grown, often supported by public funding. But what is the particular relevance of such projects for the development of the city? Are they just a fleeting form of creative capital? How can they contribute to cultural sustainability and stimulate social participation? Experts from the city council together with artists and curators working on communal art projects in Leipzig and Berlin will discuss the role and relevance of civic and artistic initiatives for their cities.

Seit zwei Jahrzehnten hat das Interesse an ortsspezifischen Kunstprojekten und urbanen Festivals zugenommen, ebenso ihre Unterstützung aus öffentlicher Hand. Aber worin genau liegt ihre Bedeutung für die Entwicklung der Stadt? Sind sie bloß ein flüchtiges kreatives Kapital? Wie können sie zu einer kulturellen Nachhaltigkeit beitragen und eine gesellschaftliche Teilhabe fördern? Über die Bedeutung bürgerschaftlicher und künstlerischer Initiativen diskutieren Experten aus der Stadtverwaltung mit Künstlern und Kuratoren, die in Stadtteil-Projekten in Leipzig und Berlin arbeiten.

In Leipzig, as in many other cities, the historical dimension of public spaces, and the changes in their political relevance thereof, are evident: Since 1989 in particular the format and structure of the Monday Demonstrations have been used symbolically in many different contexts and for many different political purposes. What methods do artists use to address this ongoing process? How can they relate meaningfully to complex individual histories and to the grand narratives of the peaceful revolution? What about other aspects of the city’s history that are still suppressed or forgotten?

In Leipzig wie in vielen anderen Städten auch sind die historische Dimension des öffentlichen Raumes und die Veränderung seiner politischen Bedeutung offensichtlich. Seit 1989 wurde besonders die symbolische Struktur der Montags-Demonstrationen für sehr unterschiedliche Zwecke verwendet. Auf welche Weise können Künstler dazu beitragen, diesen Prozess zu thematisieren? Wie können sie sich auf individuelle Geschichten beziehen, die oft von den großen Erzählungen zur Friedlichen Revolution abweichen? Wie steht es mit anderen Geschichten der Stadt, die verdrängt oder vergessen sind?
