The artist-in-residence program in collaboration with the Institute for Rural Beauty (ILS) in the Kunsthalle Below (KHB) aims to explore two facets of travel simultaneously: First, it aims to reflect on the romantic notion of the rural, the countryside and landscape from an urban perspective (inspired by Lucius Burckhardt’s “Why is landscape beautiful?” texts).  Secondly, on what does it mean personally, socially, politically and practically to travel, and why do we do it? 

ILS invites six experimental artists, who apply artistic research and respond site-specifically in their participatory artistic practice and search for an environment in which they can share with others.

KHB is an independent art space, offering a place for those who love simplicity and rural inspiration. It is located at the outskirts of Below, a beautiful old village (167 inhabitants) with an old village church,  19th century red-brick-buildings and a GDR local history. The nearest highroad is 3km, the nearest supermarket is 6km away. The village lies on the western edge of the Mecklenburg Lake District. Bathing lakes are close - with clean water and few other visitors.

Residency Program:

• The residency starts on Monday, 20.08.2018. After arrival we meet for a first introductory event. Each artist is asked to give a short (10-15 minute) presentation of his/her past work and to explain what he/she is planning for the duration of the residence.  The rest of the day will be used to settle into the space and in the evening we will share a meal together.
• On the following days there will be plenty of individual work time, a shared hot meal prepared by a local cook, and a "Open Hours" meeting from 6 to 8 pm. Each of the residents is asked to propose an activity for the "Open Hours" (a screening, a reading, a moderated conversation, a workshop etc.) which will be open to the local inhabitant and the other residents. This activity does not have to be directly related to the topic of one’s “experimental travel” or project, but if it is, would be great.
• Each resident artist will be invited by a local family for coffee and cake during the week.
• A trip to the nearby lake (May also include lunch (at your own expense) and a meeting with the owners of the local "Saloon Wild West - Kukuk").
• On Saturday (and if needed also Sunday before the last feedback round and the return trip to Berlin) each resident artist will present a project, that was either created during the residence in the KHB, or one that was previously produced and implemented locally.
• Sunday afternoon: Return to Berlin.

Important to know:
- Showers: Guests can use the cold outdoor shower or heat the wood stove bath- no running hot water).
- The Internet is unreliable - the place is not suitable for work that requires a high bandwidth.
- The participants should bring food for themselves for breakfast and dinner, but we'll also stop at a big supermarket where you can buy what you need for the week before arriving into the village.
- Bring everything you need in order to work (you can find some equipment in the KHB, but we need to discuss it in advance).
- There is space in the program for only 6 artists due to the accommodation capacity.
- Since the work in KHB is by nature site-specific and aims to engage with the human and physical environment, a basic understanding and ability to communicate in the German language is necessary.

Cost of the residency: 75 euros
These include: Arrival Monday morning from Berlin to KHB and return on Sunday. A warm vegetarian meal per day, private room (there is also a double room if you would like to come with a partner, but this must be discussed in advance), simple hygienic conditions (see http://kunsthallebelow.de/arbeitsaufenthalte/).

Das Artist-in-Residence-Programm in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Institut für ländliche Schönheit (ILS) in der Kunsthalle Below (KHB) will zu zwei Aspekten des Reisens forschen: zum einen verfolgt es das Ziel, die romantischen Vorstellungen vom Land, der Landschaft und der urbanen Perspektive der Landschaft zu reflektieren (inspiriert von Lucius Burckhardts „Warum ist Landschaft schön?“). Und zum anderen soll im Fokus stehen, was es persönlich, sozial, politisch und praktisch bedeutet, zu reisen – und warum wir es tun?

ILS lädt sechs experimentierfreudige Künstler*innen ein, die in ihrer partizipativen künstlerischen Forschungspraxis ortsspezifisch reagieren und nach einer Umgebung suchen, die sie mit anderen teilen können. 

Die KHB ist ein unabhängiger Kunstraum, sie bietet Platz für diejenigen, die Einfachheit und ländliche Inspiration lieben. Sie liegt am Dorfrand von Below,  in einem schönen alten Dorf (ca. 167 Einwohner) mit einer alten Dorfkirche, Backsteinbauten aus dem 19. Jahrhundert und einer DDR-Geschichte. Die nächste Bundesstraße ist 3km, die nächste Einkaufsmöglichkeit 6km entfernt. Das Dorf liegt am westlichen Rand der Mecklenburgischen Seenplatte. Badeseen sind nah – mit sauberem Wasser und wenig anderen Besuchern.

Residenzprogramm:

• Die Residency beginnt am Montag, den 20.08.2018. Nach der Ankunft treffen wir uns zu einer ersten Einführungsveranstaltung. Jede/r Künstler*in wird gebeten, eine kurze (10-15 Minuten) Präsentation seiner/ihrer vergangenen Arbeit zu geben und zu erläutern, was er/sie für Ihre Residenz plant. Der Rest des Tages wird genutzt, um sich einzurichten. Am Abend essen wir gemeinsam.
• An den folgenden Tagen gibt es individuelle Arbeitszeiten, eine gemeinsame warme Mahlzeit, zubereitet von einer ortsansässigen Köchin, und von 18 bis 20 Uhr eine Versammlung. Jede/r Residenzkünstler*in wird gebeten eine dieser „Open Hours“ zu gestalten, die offen für Dorfbewohner und die anderen Residenzkünstler*in ist.  (Filmvorführung, Lesung, moderierte Konversation, Workshop etc. Dieser Beitrag muss nicht direkt mit dem Thema des experimentellen Reisens oder des eigenen Projekts verbunden sein, aber wenn es das ist, ist es toll.
• Jede/r Residenzkünstler*in wird im Lauf der Woche einmal von einer örtlichen Familie zu Kaffee und Kuchen eingeladen.
• Eine Fahrt zum nahe gelegenen See (Kann auch inklusive Mittagessen (auf eigene Kosten) und einem Treffen mit den Besitzern des lokalen "Saloon Wild West - Kukuk" sein).
• Am Samstag (und wenn benötigt auch Sonntag vor einer letzten Feedbackrunde und der Rückfahrt nach Berlin) wird jeder Residenzkünstler*in ein Projekt, das während der Residenz in der KHB entstanden ist, oder eines, das zuvor produziert und lokal umgesetzt wurde, vorstellen.
• Sonntagnachmittag: Rückfahrt nach Berlin.

Wichtig zu wissen:
- Duschen: Die Gäste können die kalte Draußendusche nutzen oder den Holzofen eines Badeofens anheizen.).
- Das Internet ist unzuverlässig - der Ort eignet sich nicht für Arbeiten, die auf eine hohe Bandbreite angewiesen sind.
- Die Teilnehmer versorgen sich selbst mit Essen zum Frühstück und Abendessen. Du kannst mitbringen, was du brauchst, aber wir werden auch unterwegs in einem großen Supermarkt halten, wo jeder kaufen kann, was er/sie für die Woche braucht.
- Bringt alles mit, was ihr braucht, um eure Arbeit erledigen zu können (einige Geräte findet ihr in der KHB, darüber müssen wir uns im Voraus verständigen).
- Es gibt  aufgrund der Unterkunftskapazität nur für 6 Künstler*innen Platz im Programm.
- Ein grundlegendes Verständnis und die Fähigkeit zur Kommunikation in der deutschen Sprache ist notwendig, da das Arbeiten in der KHB ortsspezifisch ist und darauf abzielt, mit der menschlichen und physischen Umwelt zu interagieren.
